Desert Tennis Bracelet: A Southwestern Take on a Classic

This past weekend at Meltdown Studio, we hosted two full sections of our Desert Tennis Bracelet class, and the energy in the studio carried all the way through both days. It’s always special to see a project come together more than once in a weekend, especially with two completely different groups bringing their own pace and personality into the space.

The Desert Tennis Bracelet was inspired by the classic tennis bracelet, a style that’s been loved for years for its clean and timeless look. For this class, we took that familiar idea and gave it a Southwestern direction. Instead of keeping everything sleek and uniform, students leaned into texture, contrast, and a more handcrafted feel. The result was a collection of bracelets that still felt classic, but with more character and individuality built into each one.

Throughout the class, students worked through a range of core metalsmithing techniques. Each piece required soldering multiple components together, adding stamped details for texture, and setting stones to bring the bracelet to life. For some, it was their first time trying one or more of these processes, while others were building on skills they had already started developing. Either way, the project gave everyone a chance to slow down, focus, and really understand each step.

One of the most interesting parts of the weekend was seeing how different the finished pieces turned out. Even though everyone started with the same general concept, small decisions along the way made a big impact. The way someone chose to stamp their metal, place their stones, or finish their surfaces completely changed the final look. Some pieces felt bold and textured, others more minimal and refined, but all of them carried that handmade quality that makes them meaningful.

By the end of each session, the tables were filled with finished bracelets that reflected not just the design, but the time and care each student put into their work. It’s always rewarding to watch that moment when everything comes together and the piece finally feels complete.

We’re so grateful to have shared this class with two full groups of makers this past weekend. Seeing these bracelets take shape, and watching students grow more confident with each step, is what makes these classes so special.
