Mojave Magic: A Hands-On Weekend in the Studio
Last Friday and Saturday, the studio came alive with two wonderful groups of students joining us for our Mojave Half Moon Earrings class. Although it was the same class taught on both days, each group carried its own personality, pace, and creative energy, shaping two very different but equally memorable experiences.
From the moment everyone arrived, there was a quiet excitement in the air. Tables were set, tools laid out, and trays of Mojave turquoise from the Kingman Mine were ready to be explored. As students carefully chose their stones, you could already see ideas forming. Each piece of turquoise seemed to speak differently to each maker, and even before the metal work began, every design was already starting to take its own direction.
We eased into the process step by step. First, getting familiar with the tools and materials, then moving into the steady rhythm of shaping metal. Soldering became a moment of focus for many, a mix of concentration and trust in the process. As bezels were formed and adjusted around each stone, you could feel the shift in the room as confidence started to build. What began as uncertainty slowly turned into momentum.
As the class moved forward, students worked closely with their pieces, refining edges, adjusting fit, and learning to see the small details that make a big difference. When bead wire detailing was introduced, followed by oxidation and polishing, the studio took on a different rhythm again, quieter in some moments, then filled with small bursts of excitement as each finish revealed something new in the metal and stone.
Across both days, the studio carried a steady, focused energy that naturally shifted and flowed as everyone moved through each step of the process. There were moments of quiet concentration as students worked through the technical parts, followed by lighter exchanges and laughter in between tasks, but throughout, everyone stayed fully engaged and present with their work. As the earrings began to take shape, that shared focus deepened, and each student found their own rhythm in the making.
By the time the earrings were complete, the transformation was clear. Each pair carried its own character. Some leaned into bold contrast with darkened silver framing the turquoise, while others were bright and highly polished, letting the stone’s natural color take center stage. The Mojave turquoise tied everything together, with its unique patterns ensuring that no two pieces were ever alike.
As both classes came to a close, the studio was filled with a sense of accomplishment and quiet pride. Students left not only with finished earrings in hand, but with the experience of having shaped something from raw materials into something deeply personal.
