Our Sugar Skull Ring jewelry making class in Albuquerque brought students into Meltdown Studio for a hands-on experience with stamping, texturing, soldering, and stone setting. Each student created a sterling silver sugar skull ring featuring decorative patterns, floral details, and colorful stones.
A Ring Made in Remembrance
Inspired by the decorated calaveras associated with Día de los Muertos, the Sugar Skull Ring class offered a creative way to explore remembrance and personal expression through jewelry.
Students made each design their own through choices in stone color, texture, and ornamentation. Some rings featured turquoise or red stones, while others combined darkened silver with intricate floral patterns. Each piece reflected a different interpretation of the same design.
Sterling Silver, Color, and Detail
Students shaped sterling silver into distinctive skull rings, adding stamped patterns and raised floral elements to create dimension. Colorful stones provided contrast against the silver, while oxidized finishes highlighted the engraved details.
The finished rings ranged from designs with multiple stones and sculptural flowers to simpler compositions centered on a single bold stone. These variations showed how small design choices could give each piece its own character.
The Techniques Behind Each Ring
The project introduced students to several traditional metalsmithing techniques:
Stamping and texturing: Creating decorative patterns and surface details.
Soldering: Joining silver components to build the design.
Stone setting: Securing stones within the metal setting.
Forming and finishing: Shaping the ring and refining its details.
Oxidizing and polishing: Creating contrast and enhancing the finished surface.
Together, these techniques transformed sterling silver and individual design elements into wearable keepsakes.
Every Ring Told a Different Story
The finished Sugar Skull Rings combined colorful stones, floral motifs, and hand-stamped details in a variety of ways. Inspired by Día de los Muertos, the designs offered students an opportunity to create jewelry with personal meaning while developing practical metalsmithing skills.
The result was a collection of distinctive rings that balanced craftsmanship with individual expression.
