From Pharmaceuticals to Fine Silver: A Creative Journey Inspired by the Southwest

When Suzanne Freinberg moved to Albuquerque, she quickly fell in love with the rich artistry and symbolism of Southwest jewelry. Inspired by Native American makers and their deep connection to craft, Suzanne decided to take her creativity into her own hands after retiring from a long career in pharmaceuticals.

“I was always drawn to the beauty and meaning behind Southwest jewelry,” she says. “After moving here, I knew I wanted to learn how to make it myself.”

Her journey began at Meltdown Studio, where she immersed herself in lapidary work with instructor Jim. Her very first project, a striking piece featuring White Buffalo stone, remains one of her proudest creations. “It’s the best piece I ever made,” Suzanne smiles. “Everyone wants it, but it’s not for sale.”

As her passion grew, Suzanne joined Meltdown as a benchmate, surrounded by a community of artists who encouraged her to keep developing her skills. “I melted down a lot of jewelry along the way,” she laughs, “but that’s how you learn.”

Over time, Suzanne’s work evolved into a distinctive contemporary Southwest style, blending clean design with cultural influence and personal inspiration, including her dogs. Her Dog Paw rings and pendants have become beloved pieces among her collectors.

She continues to expand her techniques, learning silver bead making and stamping from Lyndon Tsosie and Curtis Pete, and taking classes with Margie and Lauren at Meltdown.

Today, seven years into her jewelry journey, Suzanne’s creativity continues to shine through each handcrafted piece. Her advice for new makers:

“Making jewelry can be dangerous—flying objects, burning hair, bruises! But it’s also incredibly fulfilling. Keep learning, keep creating.”

You can find Suzanne’s work locally at Rio Grande and through her growing network of collectors who cherish her contemporary take on Southwest design.

Stay tuned as we proudly spotlight Suzanne in next week’s newsletter and reel as part of The Meltdown Collective, celebrating makers who grow, inspire, and shine at Meltdown Studio.
