Our Rose Cut Ring silversmithing class in Albuquerque brought students into Meltdown Studio for a hands-on day of shaping bands, soldering, texturing, and stone setting. Each student created a finished sterling silver ring featuring a rose cut stone while learning foundational metalsmithing and stone-setting techniques.
Last Saturday felt like one of those steady, focused days in the studio.
Nothing rushed. Just people settling in, getting comfortable at the bench, and figuring things out as they went. Some had never picked up a torch before, others came in with a bit more confidence, but everyone started with the same materials and the same curiosity about how it would all come together.
There’s something about working with rose cut stones that naturally slows things down. They don’t have that sharp sparkle. Instead, they give off a softer kind of glow that shifts with the light. It makes you look a little closer, take your time.
We started with the basics. Shaping bands, testing textures, getting used to the feel of the tools. There were a few moments of hesitation at first, especially with soldering, but that’s always part of it. Once the first join works, you can feel the shift. Things start to click.
As the rings began to take form, the studio found its rhythm. Hammering, filing, small adjustments, checking the fit, then checking it again. It’s not about getting everything perfect right away. It’s about working through the process and understanding how the material responds.
Choosing the stones was a highlight, as always. A small collection laid out, each one slightly different in color and character. You could see people take their time with it, going back and forth before deciding on the one that felt right.
Setting the stone brought a new level of focus. Building the bezel, making sure everything fits cleanly, carefully easing the metal into place. It takes patience, but it’s also where everything starts to feel real.
By the end of the session, the benches were filled with finished rings. Sterling silver paired with warm bronze details, each one shaped by the person who made it. No two were the same, and that’s what made it special.
It wasn’t about making something perfect. It was about making something your own.
And those are usually the pieces that get worn the most.
