South+West Standard Cuff Jewelry Making Class in Albuquerque: An Everyday Favorite in the Making
Our South+West Standard Cuff jewelry making class in Albuquerque brought students into Meltdown Studio for a hands-on day of sawing, soldering, shaping, stone setting, oxidation, and polishing. Each student created a finished sterling silver cuff bracelet while learning foundational metalsmithing and silversmithing techniques.
This past weekend, the studio welcomed back our South+West Standard Cuff class, and it carried that familiar feeling of a good project returning right when it’s needed.
There’s something grounding about this piece. The design is minimal, timeless, and quietly confident. It’s the kind of bracelet that doesn’t try to stand out, but somehow ends up being the one people reach for again and again. It settles into daily life quickly, like it was always meant to be there.
Throughout the day, students worked with sterling silver and a curated selection of stones, slowly shaping each cuff into something personal. A flat sheet of metal gradually transformed into a finished form, guided by foundational metalsmithing techniques including soldering, shaping, stone setting, oxidation, and polishing.
Stone setting often becomes a turning point in the process. It can feel intimidating at first, especially with smaller stones, but something shifts once the bezel starts to curl and hold everything in place. It’s subtle, but suddenly the piece stops feeling like a work in progress and starts feeling real. You can see that moment land when it happens.
There’s also a quiet appreciation that builds throughout the day. What looks simple on the surface actually depends on a series of small, intentional choices. The comfort of the cuff, the balance on the wrist, the smoothness of each edge. These are the details that don’t always stand out individually, but shape how natural the final piece feels to wear.
By the end of class, the benches were filled with finished cuffs, each one slightly different but sharing the same understated design language. And almost everyone slipped theirs on before even leaving the studio. That moment never gets old, seeing something that began as raw material already being worn out the door.
These are the kinds of pieces that don’t wait for special occasions. They become part of everyday rotation, stacked with old favorites, catching light in familiar ways. More than anything, they carry the memory of the time spent making them.
