Southwest Jewelry Workshop in Albuquerque with Chris Pruitt: Learning Through Process
Our Southwest Studio Sessions jewelry workshop in Albuquerque brought students into Meltdown Studio for a hands-on weekend of advanced silversmithing techniques, tool control, and intentional metalwork. Guided by guest instructor Chris Pruitt, students explored precision, pressure, and process while creating finished jewelry pieces and strengthening their foundation in traditional metalsmithing skills.
One of the things we love most about our Southwest Studio Sessions is the opportunity to spend meaningful time with artists whose work has been shaped by decades of experience, curiosity, and dedication to their craft.
This past workshop with Chris Pruitt was exactly that.
Throughout the weekend, students had the opportunity to learn directly from Chris as he shared not only the techniques behind his work, but also the thought process, problem-solving, and attention to detail that have become hallmarks of his approach as a jeweler.
Like many worthwhile techniques, the process wasn't always easy. There were moments that required patience, careful observation, and a willingness to slow down and make adjustments. Students quickly discovered that success often comes from the small decisions: how a tool is held, how pressure is applied, how metal responds, and how subtle changes can dramatically affect the final result.
Watching Chris work was a reminder that mastery isn't about rushing to the finish line. It's built through repetition, experience, and a deep understanding of materials gained over many years at the bench.
Throughout the class, students were encouraged to ask questions, experiment, and develop confidence in techniques that may have felt unfamiliar at the beginning of the weekend. As the projects began to take shape, so did a greater appreciation for the level of skill and practice behind truly exceptional jewelry.
By the end of the workshop, students left with finished work, new technical knowledge, and a deeper understanding of the craft itself. Just as importantly, they gained insight into the discipline, patience, and dedication that allow artists like Chris to continually refine their work over a lifetime.
We are incredibly grateful to Chris for sharing his time, knowledge, and generosity with our students. Workshops like these are exactly why Southwest Studio Sessions exists: to create opportunities for meaningful learning, hands-on exploration, and direct access to some of the Southwest's most talented makers.
