We’re pleased to continue Southwest Studio Sessions, a new series of immersive weekend workshops at Meltdown Studio led by guest instructors from across the Southwest. These sessions are designed to offer focused, hands-on learning with artists whose work is shaped by deep experience, regional practice, and a strong connection to material.

Our programming continues with an immersive masterclass led by silversmith Curtis Pete (@hopipete). Curtis’ heavy stamping and meticulous design are immediately recognizable and highly sought after by collectors. This workshop offers a rare opportunity to learn directly from his process and approach to silversmithing.

Over the course of this hands-on class, you will transform sterling silver into a substantial, enduring ring. Beginning with reclaimed sterling silver, you’ll melt it down and pour your own ingot to fabricate a hand-poured ring shank. You’ll forge, refine, and stamp the silver, building weight, structure, and character into the band.

You will then melt additional silver and learn to sand cast a design of your choosing, selecting from a curated collection of Curtis Pete’s original masterpieces. This cast element becomes the focal point of your ring, resulting in a piece that reflects both traditional technique and personal craftsmanship.

This workshop also explores thoughtful use of precious metal. Through ingot pouring and sand casting, you’ll gain practical insight into how silver can be used efficiently during a time of rising material costs, reinforcing both technical skill and material awareness.

Southwest Studio Sessions are intentionally structured as immersive workshops, creating space for careful instruction, shared learning, and focused studio time. The experience is hands-on, technically rich, and deeply instructive.

Techniques we will cover:
• Melting and pouring sterling silver into ingot form
• Forging and shaping a heavy ring shank
• Traditional stamping and surface detail
• Sand casting using curated original designs
• Soldering, oxidation, and polishing

Materials we will use:
• Sterling silver (provided)

You’ll leave with a heavy sterling silver ring created from hand-poured and cast silver, expanded technical confidence, and meaningful time spent learning from master silversmith Curtis Pete.
