Gemstone Buckle Band: Jewelry Making Class in Albuquerque
Our Gemstone Buckle Band jewelry making class in Albuquerque on September 12 brought students together at Meltdown Studio for a hands-on day of silverwork, gemstones, and creativity. Working with sterling silver and faceted gemstones, students learned texturing, forming, soldering, bezel making, stone setting, oxidizing, and polishing as they created their own rings.
One of the most enjoyable parts of the class was seeing each student make the project their own. The wraparound design provided a starting point, but each student’s choice of gemstone, texture, and finish gave their ring a personal touch. The finished pieces featured beautiful colors, including soft purple, bright green, and warm golden tones.
Learning and Creating at the Bench
Students spent time shaping and texturing sterling silver, carefully working through the steps needed to form the buckle band. As they practiced, they had opportunities to ask questions, try new techniques, and build confidence with the tools.
The process continued with soldering, bezel making, and stone setting. Each stage brought the rings closer to completion, allowing students to see their ideas take shape through hands-on work.
Adding the gemstones was a particularly personal part of the experience. Different colors and shapes gave each ring its own character, while the shared project allowed students to learn alongside one another. The studio became a place to focus, experiment, and enjoy the satisfaction of making something from start to finish.
By the time students reached the oxidizing and polishing stages, their individual choices were clearly visible. Although everyone began with the same Gemstone Buckle Band design, each finished ring was distinctly their own.
