Jewelry Making Class in Albuquerque: Fall Statement Ring
Our Fall Statement Ring jewelry making class. Students spent hands-on time learning sawing, soldering, stone setting, oxidizing, and polishing while creating their own sterling silver statement rings.
On Saturday, October 3rd, we welcomed one group of students for the class. The following day, Sunday, October 4th, we opened the studio again for a completely different group to take on the same project.
The design was the same. The experience was not.
Choosing the Perfect Stone
Each day started with students looking through the collection of fall-colored stones, turning them over in their hands, comparing shapes and colors, and imagining what each one might look like as a finished ring. Some students seemed to know immediately which stone was theirs. Others took a little longer, and it was fun watching that decision slowly come together.
Then came the part where things started to feel real.
Sheets and pieces of sterling silver became bands. Students measured, marked, cut, bent, and adjusted their metal, discovering that making jewelry is often less about getting everything perfect on the first try and more about looking closely, making a small adjustment, and trying again.
Learning at the Bench
There were plenty of moments of concentration around the tables.
Students leaned in closely over their work, checking whether a piece was sitting just right. Some stopped to watch a demonstration before going back to their own bench. Others compared what they were doing with the person sitting next to them, sharing little discoveries along the way.
And then there were those moments when someone finally got a tricky part right.
You could see it on their faces.
That little shift from, “Am I doing this correctly?” to, “Wait, I actually made this.”
That feeling is a big part of what makes our jewelry making classes in Albuquerque so special. Students are not simply following instructions to produce a finished piece. They are learning to work with metal, understand their tools, make decisions about their design, and trust their hands along the way.
From Silver to Statement Ring
By the afternoon, the tables looked completely different from how they had in the morning. The scattered pieces of metal had become recognizable rings, and the stones everyone had carefully chosen were finally sitting in their settings.
The best part was seeing how differently each student interpreted the same design.
Some rings felt earthy and understated. Others had stones with dramatic patterns that immediately became the star of the piece. Even though everyone started with the same project, the finished rings reflected the individual choices and personalities of the people who made them.
And across both days, there was a common moment we always love: students putting their finished rings on for the first time.
After spending hours cutting, soldering, shaping, setting, oxidizing, and polishing, there is something pretty satisfying about sliding the finished piece onto your finger and realizing that you made that.
Two Groups, Two Experiences
Two groups came through the studio that weekend. Two very different rooms of people. But both left with the same thing: a little more confidence in their hands, a new set of skills, and a Fall Statement Ring that they could genuinely say they made themselves.
That is what we love about Make It at Meltdown. The finished ring is only part of the experience. The best part is everything that happens while you are making it.
